High capacity LTO-5 Backup Tape Format will be released in 2010
LTO is a successful high capacity tape format which offers superior reliability and unprecedented performance. So far four version of LTO media format have been launched. The linear tape open consortium is gearing up for the fifth generation of the highly reliable LTO data storage technology. The LTO-5 tape format is expected to be introduced into the market in the first quarter of year 2010.
The recording speed of LTO-5 ultrium tape format will be enhanced to 180 Mbps and capacity of 1.6 TB in native form. The compression ratio in LTO-5 tape format will be 2:1, which is same for all versions of LTO technology. This means that in compressed mode, both the speed and recording capability of LTO-5 tape will be doubled. Advanced features will be added to LTO-5 tape format which will enable the I.T mangers to handle voluminous information. The investments of the customers will be secured as the LTO-5 tape format will offer backward compatibility.
